How to look fresh-faced without pfaffing!

Spoiler Alert* I have a nice little reader offer for you guys. I’ll put it at the end of the post 😉

When it comes to make-up, I’m not that into it. I need to get up and go – make myself look decent in a short space of time. Most days it’s some tinted moisturizer or BB cream, a lick of mascara and a pinch of my cheeks on my way out the door. But sometimes, particularly if I have a client or an event to go to, it’s fun to play a bit and spend a little more time on the details. When I say details it’s a relative term – I mean I don’t even know how to contour or use a highlighter (WTF).

So the other day I went to my make-up artist friend Sinead’s house. Sinead founded the brand Lula Fox together with Fiona Buchner in 2016. It was Sinead’s husband’s brush with hormonal cancer in 2013 that sparked the idea for the brand. Sinead became acutely aware of endocrine disrupting ingredients in body products and cosmetics. And, finding very little clean beauty products available in the South African market at the time that performed to the level she required – after much research and testing Lula Fox was born. Lula Fox is a pioneering South African range of all natural, professional make-up crafted from natural, organic and non-toxic ingredients.

I’ve shared more on the brand at the end of this post.

I’m constantly up in the faces of my children and smooshing my cheeks into theirs, so I like to use clean products on my skin as I don’t like the thought of all the usual chemicals rubbing off from me onto their little skins. I also try to be conscious of what toxic load I put into my body, make-up obviously being one of the contributing elements, hence I’ve started switching to the Lula Fox range. I’m not fanatical about natural skincare, but I always actively seek out the ‘clean’ options. I haven’t done in-depth research so won’t profess to that, I just prefer the idea of putting natural products onto my skin and into my body, where possible.. I’ll do a post down the line about what body and facial skincare products I use, and why. We also use predominantly non-toxic cleaning products at home, but that’s a boring topic!

For today, I’m sharing a quick step-by-step process of what I’d put onto my face, on a day where I’m seeing a client or wanting to make a little effort.

Apologies in advance for the incessant photos of my face up close, I know I’m sick of seeing myself so can only imagine that you would be too. Try to just focus on the make up at each step!

Here goes..

Before with zero make-up. Yikes. Wrinkles.

After applying foundation – with a brush that I bought there and then. It was the first time I’ve ever used a brush to apply foundation and it’s a game changer – told you I was clueless.

Then we did brows – this is also something new to me. The first time I ever had my brows shaped was last year!! And I never used to fill them in with pencil or shadow or the like. Yes, I’ve been under a rock.

Then some cream blush. I’m still using my Bobbi Brown cream blushes that I really like, but will switch to this Lula Fox one when I’ve used them up. I like cream blush rather than a powder as it’s so easy to apply with my fingers and gives a more natural look.

Then obvs did mascara and a nude lip gloss, this is one thing I generally do every day even if I do nothing else. It just kind of makes me look awake. Oh and some neutral eye shadow which you can hardly see because I sadly don’t have big/open eyelids. Lastly Sinead applied a beautiful product called glow pot to give that dewy look that I like.

And that was it. Here’s the final pic.

I have recorded this step by step live in stories highlights under Tips and Tricks on Instagram FYI, so if you want to watch there you can see Sinead actually applying each step.

OK SO HERE’S THE READER OFFER! If you comment on this post you could win a Makeover Experience in studio, valued at R450. Thanks for a decent, simple and ‘powerful’ post. I hate make up and consider myself painted when I add mascara to the (basic essential) lipstick 💋
I’m sure the hubby & kids would appreciate a bit more effort though…. I do want a new more basic colour lipstick though!
