cleaning your wardrobe. See it as a how to declutter process, and everyone wants to do that, right?

We’re through the first day of spring, so what better time is there to do this!

Here you go:

  1. Take out all the clothes in your wardrobe – in sections e.g. tops. Follow the below steps, then move onto the next section.
  1. Put back those items that you LOVE
  1. Sort through the remainder and put the items you definitely dislike into a pile – ready to be donated or perhaps thrown away
  1. With the remainder of the pile, ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I feel good when I wear this item? Does it make me feel confident?
  • When last did I actually wear this item? Can I envisage myself wearing it again?
  • Does this item fit me properly? Is it flattering on my body?
  • Is this item comfortable, or do I want to take it off halfway through the day?
  1. If you answered NO to any of the above questions, it’s time to let go of them. If you still can’t do this, put them into a bag or box, out of the way. Then, if you haven’t thought about any of the items in the box for 6 months, it’s safe to say you can let go of them.
  1. Start with the next section of clothing e.g. pants and follow the same process
  1. Once you’re done, spend time organizing your wardrobe in ways that work for you!

* one other tip, take a ‘maybe’ item and force yourself to wear it, then see how you feel that day when you have it on – if you’re not feeling good wearing it then you know that it’s ok to let it go!

When it comes to make-up, I’m not that into it. I need to get up and go – make myself look decent in a short space of time. Most days it’s some tinted moisturizer or BB cream, a lick of mascara and a pinch of my cheeks on my way out the door. But sometimes, particularly if I have a client or an event to go to, it’s fun to play a bit and spend a little more time on the details. When I say details it’s a relative term – I mean I don’t even know how to contour or use a highlighter (WTF).

So the other day I went to my make-up artist friend Sinead’s house. Sinead founded the brand Lula Fox together with Fiona Buchner in 2016. I’m constantly up in the faces of my children and smooshing my cheeks into theirs, so I like to use clean products on my skin as I don’t like the thought of all the usual chemicals rubbing off from me onto their little skins. I also try to be conscious of what toxic load I put into my body, make-up obviously being one of the contributing elements, hence I’ve started switching to the Lula Fox range. For today, I’m sharing a quick step-by-step process of what I’d put onto my face, on a day where I’m seeing a client or wanting to make a little effort.

Apologies in advance for the incessant photos of my face up close, I know I’m sick of seeing myself so can only imagine that you would be too. Try to just focus on the make up at each step!

Here goes..

Before with zero make-up. Yikes. Wrinkles. 

After applying foundation – with a brush that I bought there and then. It was the first time I’ve ever used a brush to apply foundation and it’s a game changer – told you I was clueless.

Then we did brows – this is also something new to me. The first time I ever had my brows shaped was last year!! And I never used to fill them in with pencil or shadow or the like. Yes, I’ve been under a rock.

Then some cream blush. I’m still using my Bobbi Brown cream blushes that I really like, but will switch to this Lula Fox one when I’ve used them up. I like cream blush rather than a powder as it’s so easy to apply with my fingers and gives a more natural look.

Then obvs did mascara and a nude lip gloss, this is one thing I generally do every day even if I do nothing else. It just kind of makes me look awake. Oh and some neutral eye shadow which you can hardly see because I sadly don’t have big/open eyelids. Lastly Sinead applied a beautiful product called glow pot to give that dewy look that I like.

over the April period, if not then maybe you’ll find this article beneficial for your next trip.

The weird thing is that regardless of whether it’s a long weekend, or a two-week stint away, you basically need to pack the same stuff. If there’s a washing machine where you’re going you actually don’t need to pack more than what you would for a long weekend, unless you want a few more options.

If you’re one of those people who always packs too much, you might want to carry on reading for some quick and easy packing tips, as well as my standard list of what I take whenever I go away at this time of the year (and pretty much any time of year really).

The most obvious – consider the weather where you’re going. It is always going to be slightly chilly in the evenings in April, so make sure you pack a few extra layers. ** Disclaimer: If you’re going on a city break then you won’t find this packing list helpful, I’ll do another article for that if you think it would be helpful?

So let’s get into my list:

1. Comfy jeans – the last thing you want to feel on holiday is uncomfortable, so make sure you pack that fave pair of jeans for the odd rainy/cooler day.

2. Leggings/Track pants – even more comfy than jeans, and great to wear after a warm shower post your evening beach swim or mountain walk, when you’re not quite ready to get into your pj’s.

3. Long length button down shirt. I have a favourite soft denim one that is long enough to wear over leggings, or I wear it nipped into the front of my jeans, it’s also cool enough to wear on a warm day when I roll the sleeves, and it gives me proper sun coverage so is super versatile.

4. A few sleeveless vests and tees in black/white/grey/stripe. That way you have an option that can work for whatever you choose to wear on your bottom half.

5. 1 x printed/statement top in case I don’t feel like wearing one of my basics.

6. Slip slops – for easy slip ons to pop into town or down to the beach.

7. Running shoes – even though I don’t run (yet). I will always make a plan to go for some type of walk and you need the right shoes for that.

8. Slippers, I like to have warm feet. I’m not talking the bulky lambswool ones, just a woolies slip on does me fine.

9. Casual sneakers, they go with everything and if it’s a slightly cooler day I might not want to wear slops, but I also don’t like the look of my running shoes with a summery dress so that’s where the casual sneaker comes in.

10. Non-underwire bras, for wearing underneath pj’s if you’re going away with people that aren’t used to seeing you hanging loose as you’re dipping your rusk into your morning cuppa. I still wear my breastfeeding bras cause they’re the most comfy!

11. A summer dress – to throw on over a cozzie, to wear to lunch or moseying around the village you’re staying in.

12. A Kikoi/wrap – to wrap around your waist when you don’t feel like wearing shorts or pants, especially if you’re at the beach and are popping down for a swim, it can double up as a beach towel.

13. A scarf – to add that extra warmth on a cooler evening or beach walk.

14. Jacket.

15. A casual handbag. I love my little crossbody Missibaba one, or sometimes a pretty canvas tote.

The best advice I can give you is to stick to neutrals for the tops and bottoms, that way you can always make up an outfit and you get versatility with each piece i.e. you want to guarantee that you can pretty much wear each top with each pair of shorts/skirt.

The other day my husband and I went to First Thursdays in Rosebank. I had been wanting to go for ages so was well excited that we managed to get our act together and get there. The plan was to go to Marble for a drink, and then take it from there. 

I don’t have a lot of options when it comes to ‘going out clothes’ – as my husband likes to refer to them, but I know I have at least 4 evening tops and that’s fine for now, considering that we hardly ever go out!

So if you’re at a bit of a loss as to what to wear on a date, I can give you some suggestions of a few basics to incorporate into your wardrobe that will enable you to always have something to wear. Here they are:

  1. A black silk shirt. I got mine from Everlane when a friend was in the U.S. as I had been hunting for one for so long and never found anything locally. 
  2. Anything with velvet. The texture of velvet takes your whole look up into the ‘smart’ category. I have worn my velvet-front sweater from Jigsaw too many times to remember and always get compliments on it. If velvet isn’t your thing think of having it as an accent, so even a thin velvet scarf or a top with velvet edging.
  3. A leather jacket. I always feel the cold so I usually take a jacket with me whenever we go out. A leather jacket works over basically anything and it’s way more cool than a pashmina!
  4. A pair of heels, or if you just don’t do heels, a pair of pointy flats in a shiny patent leather look awesome with skinnies or wide leg pants.
  5. A go-to pair of jeans that you know you look kick-ass in!
  6. Sequins – same as velvet, you don’t need to go all out but a sequinned accent gives instant glam factor. 

I could list a bunch more but those are just some ideas of basics that I know you’d use, from my own personal experience as well as my time with clients.

And if all else fails WEAR LIPSTICK!

There’s invariably never enough space in your car – especially when you have kids, or if you’re flying you obviously have limited space, so you need to pack light! To me you need to pack things that can work for all holiday necessities – each item needs to serve at least 2 x purposes e.g. beach to braai. It’s the time when you really need to think of creating that perfect holiday capsule wardrobe. 

We are heading to the coast for two weeks. I’ve just posted a video sharing my beach essentials on Instagram.

Obvs there’s more detail on this post so read on if you like…Even if you’re going to the berg or somewhere inland, this list may help you with how to pack for your own holiday, and get you thinking about your holiday capsule. 

Side note: If you holiday overseas, like maybe you’re going to New York or somewhere equally glamorous, this list won’t apply, but if you tend to stay local like me, read on….

Jogger pants– I love these as they’re basically as comfy as wearing pyjamas, and who wouldn’t want to wear pj’s all day.

Shorts– NOT board shorts! I’m talking actual shorts that you wear around town. They’re perfect for wearing to the beach and back, great for hiking if you’re in the mountains, or just for strolls around the town you’re staying in. 

Tees and blouses – to be worn with said shorts. Blouses add a bit of glam factor for the evening and you can wear them with either the jogger pants or a pair of denims, whereas tees are more of a dress down option.

Kaftans/comfy shift dress in soft fabric– I wear one of these to the beach every day, some of them are sheer and very cool, others are a little longer and in a heavier fabric. Kaftans provide protection from the sun and they’re also great for wearing in the evening, or for when you come off the beach and change out of your wet cozzie, but you still want to feel beachy and comfy.

Scarves– perfect for adding that little bit of extra warmth for the slightly chilly evenings. They also work when worn as a sarong and can be thrown over your shoulders if you’ve had too much sun.

Leggings– Generally I’m not a fan of these, but I wear them SO much on holiday as they’re comfy and functional – easy to pair with a long-ish blouse or a basic tee and a longer length cardi. They’re great for the slightly colder days and also for keeping you warm on an evening beach stroll.

Comfy slip slops – easy to throw on and they make you feel like you’re on holiday

Running shoes –  not that I’m running again (yet), but I like to go for walks and I need to wear proper shoes for that. 

Puffer jacket – to keep you warm and snuggly when sitting around the campfire, or heading out onto a boat, or having sundowners on the rocks..

So those are my key holiday wardrobe basics, obviously I’ve taken the fact that it’s autumn into account…

She sent me a message the other day, telling me that she might need help with her wardrobe as she needs to be ‘properly corporate now’ 😉 So we had a chat about what she has in her existing wardrobe, what things she needs to go and buy and where she can find them. It was very deep and meaningful and first world. And it took all of 5 minutes, in-between interruptions from our kids demanding biscuits. 

It may seem shallow to spend so much time considering how you look, but let me tell you, it’s not. I could write pages and pages on this subject but I won’t. Simply put – it’s a known fact that a person makes a judgement call on another person within 90 seconds of meeting them. How you look plays a massive role in this judgement call, so then don’t you agree that, particularly in the work place, it’s imperative that you take time to consider how you look?

So let’s get into the topic of what to wear for a job interview. As I said in my previous post, I hate sounding like yet another what to/how to, but if you’re needing help and you trust my opinion, then read on..And if you aren’t going for an interview you may still find my tips beneficial for how to dress at the office. 

I can’t prescribe the exact items you need to wear because there are particular factors to consider that will determine these. Firstly, consider the environment you’re going to i.e. is it a bank, a law firm, an ad agency, a consulting company, you get the idea? You always need to take this into account when you plan your outfit. The reason I mention this is pretty obvious – to wear a suit to an interview at an ad agency would just get you some strange looks, whereas if you’re looking to move into a law firm then a suit is absolutely a good option. 

Then consider the type of role that you are interviewing for, so let’s say you’re going to an agency – are you interviewing for the creative director role or the account manager role? Your dress code can reflect this too. Maybe you’re going for a creative director role, you want your look to demonstrate your creative flair, so perhaps add an accessory to your outfit that does this for you.  

Wherever or whatever you’re interviewing for, you always want to be taken seriously. You want to look like you respect the job and its environment. The way you look plays a massive role in communicating this. 

Here’s my advice:

  • The more structured your outfit is, the more serious you look – think a soft floaty dress that twirls when you spin vs. a shift dress in a structured fabric, the shift is definitely the better option! 
  • Take a look at the state of each item you’re wearing. Scuffed shoes and a stained blouse are tatty. Faded black pants again show a lack of respect – for yourself as well as the intended job. 
  • Focus on the fit of your outfit, your pants could be a phenomenally expensive brand, but if they are too short or gape at the waist your whole look is taken down a notch. Find yourself a tailor and get your items to fit you perfectly. 
  • Less is always more, except when it comes to hemlines!

Once you get that dream job, you might want to think about how to make getting dressed each day easy and effortless. You don’t need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe either. I suggest focusing on getting some really good basics to begin with, leave the ‘wow’ prints to later. A black shift dress is a lot more versatile and can be worn once or even twice a week without anyone noticing that you’re in the same dress – if paired with different accessories, a scarf, different shoes or a jacket. Nobody will look at you and think “oh there’s Susan in her floral print dress again!”

And when it comes to fashion topics there are so many freakin’ articles and opinions on the ‘do’s and don’ts’ , the ‘what-not-to-wear’, the ‘this season’s must have’ and and and. I’M SO OVER IT.

If I ever start becoming preachy like so many of these articles are, please tell me. 

BUT, in saying all of the above, getting tips from an expert in his/her field is the best way to access any information you need, agreed?

Listening to that expert’s advice is actually a time saver.

For example, when it comes to my home decor, I always ask a friend who is an interior designer to point me in the right direction for what I am looking for. I’m not that bothered and, more importantly, I don’t have the time to trawl the internet for what’s on trend, what fabric can work on x surface, what rug texture is best for x etc. I’d rather ask a trusted source and just go with what she tells me. So, if I am your trusted source when it comes to wardrobes, then read on…

If you want to simplify your life and you’re keen to get cracking with your wardrobe as one element of this process, then I highly recommend following the below steps. Yes, it requires allocating some time to it, but the primary benefit once you’ve done this, is that of time-saving, so it’s worth it!

  1. Take out all the clothes in your wardrobe – in sections e.g. tops. Follow the below steps, then move onto the next section and follow steps 2 – 5 again.
  2. Put back those tops that you LOVE, would buy again, would wear today!
  3. Sort through the remainder and put those tops you definitely dislike into a pile – ready to be donated or perhaps thrown away
  4. With the remainder of the pile, ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I feel good when I wear this item? 
  • When last did I actually wear this item? Can I envisage myself wearing it again?
  • Does this item fit me properly? Is it flattering on my body?
  • Is this item comfortable, or do I want to take it off halfway through the day?
  1. If you answered NO to any of the above questions, it’s time to let go of them. If you still can’t do this, put them into a bag or box, out of the way. Then, if you haven’t thought about any of the items in the box for 6 months, it’s safe to say you can let go of them.
  2. Start with the next section of clothing e.g. pants and follow the same process, then do the same with your shoes, accessories, jackets, knitwear etc.
  3. Once you’re done, spend time organizing your wardrobe in ways that work for you!

I do this wardrobe detox with clients when I go to their homes, so if this is too overwhelming for you to do alone, give me a shout and I can help you. It truly is money well spent. 

Right, so after you’ve completed this process you can pat yourself on the back cause it’s not easy.

But wait, there’s a bit more to do..

If you want to take things a step further and really understand how to build a minimalist wardrobe – a wardrobe that you love, I’ve got some more tips for you to follow. I totally subscribe to Caroline from un-fancy’s approach, and have amended her tips slightly below. 

  1. Take a look at the loved pieces, your favourites. From there build your YES list in terms of fabrics; brands; fit; colours and other stuff like the style of the item e.g. high-waisted skirts or v-neck tees
  2. Take a look at that pile you created of the pieces you don’t wear, and ask yourself why? Write down a NO list (think of all factors e.g. it creases, rides up your tummy, it makes you sweat like a mo-fo, you’re not sure where to wear it etc.)
  3. Look at your lifestyle and your work and think about the different activities you generally do every week e.g. lunch with friends, work from home, yoga, dinners out. Also have a think about what types of special events are in season for you, like 40th’s or weddings etc. Write these down.
  4. Think about the general climate that you live in e.g. Jo’burg winter = sunny warm days, cold mornings and evenings which means that layers are needed. Think about the type of layers for your lifestyle (e.g. jackets – smart vs. cardigans – casual). Write this down!
  5. List the brands you like to shop at or want to shop at (this is an extension of step 1 and 2)
  6. Think about your go-to every day combinations/uniforms e.g.dress + sandals + denim jacket in summer, or denims + ankle boots + jersey in winter  – you’ll see that these combinations generally contain your most loved items from step 1.
  7. Write down a few words that you’d like to associate your style with e.g. bohemian, classic, understated, bold, quirky, effortless, vintage etc.  

Once you’ve considered all of the above you’ll have a sense of what type of wardrobe you’re after, and how you think you want to dress. Pinterest and Instagram are great online platforms for you to browse, you can build a board in Pinterest and this will help to clarify what type of look you like. 

Once you start enjoying the benefits of a minimalist wardrobe, you’ll find it easier and easier to let go of those items that you don’t love, and you’ll find it easier to make the right choices when you next hit the shops.

As I’ve said before, a Minimalist Wardrobe is not about limiting yourself to x amount of items, rather it is about having only items in it that you love.

And I love ALL my stripes!

One of the key things to consider when building a Minimalist Wardrobe is to have a look at your go-to ‘uniforms’ and to make sure you have the foundations for those. One of my uniforms is denim + a striped tee + a pair of sandals or sneakers. I wear this combination a lot. I like it and it works for me. So, if I have a lot of striped tees in my wardrobe that’s all good because I know I wear them on high rotation, and I feel good in them. Sorry – it seems that I’m talking about myself incessantly here, but I’m trying to give you an example. Can you relate?

The thing with stripes is that they have a bad name. So many of my clients will try something on that is striped and then say, “oh…this looks great, but I thought I wasn’t supposed to wear stripes?”

In those stupid style ‘rulebooks’ that exist all over the Internet, stripes get bandied about as making a person look wider or bigger, when in reality they can actually do the opposite. I’m not talking rugby jersey stripes – obvs, I’m talking the narrow kind, these can actually create the illusion of a waist, even if you don’t have one, promise!

Whenever I do a personal shopping trip for a client, a striped tee is always on my list, even if it’s not on theirs. (Unless of course said client has an aversion to them). Stripes really are a wardrobe basic that I believe everyone should own.

So, next time you’re in the shops, keep an eye out for a stripey top and if you see one you like and it fits you well, buy it, you’ll wear it more than you think!

The thing is that I really, really like them, all of them. So I guess in term of the whole Minimalist Wardrobe thing, it’s all good. 

Currently my bags are stored in the cupboard next to my bed. The other day I got a bee in my bonnet and decided to sort through this cupboard as it had accumulated all sorts of other unwanted, misplaced stuff, in addition to the jumbled up handbags.

It was such a rewarding experience. I took everything out and either put it in its rightful place, or I chucked it. I’m talking random slips of paper; loose photos; a spare tube from my breast pump (??); a kids colouring in book, and the list goes on.

Next I tackled the handbags. I took them out, one by one and upturned each one into the basin in the bathroom. Leaves; bits of dirt; stones (mum of boys); stale peppermints; hair clips – handbags clearly being one of the primary abysses they fall into; a long-lost lipstick that I’d been wondering about *yay* and other random stuff was discovered.

I gave all the bags a good wipe down and stored them again, in two neat piles (will see how long these last) according to their function i.e. I ended up with a cross-body pile and a shoulder sling pile. Not the best storage solution, but it’ll have to do for now.

I generally use 2 or 3 bags in rotation for a period of time like a month or so, and then I’ll swop one or two out and use those chosen 2 for the next few weeks. I’m just too lazy to take out a different one each day so I kind of swop between 2 at a time. What does make things easier is I have a little pouch that houses all my lip balms/lip sticks (lip balm being something I don’t leave the house without) and so when I’m quickly swopping bags I can take the pouch out of the one I’ve been using and throw it into the ‘new’ bag very easily. Then really it’s just about adding my cell phone and wallet as the absolute essentials. Generally each bag has a stick of chewing gum and some tissues in it as well, so then I don’t need to transfer those.

So I’m curious, do you swop your bags out each day or do you just use one? What are your handbag essentials? 

In my dream dressing room I’d definitely allocate space for hanging up my handbags. As with jewellery and scarves – the more visible they are, the more you’ll use and enjoy them.

How do you store your handbags? I think the ideal solution would be to have a section of hooks up on your wall either in your bedroom or somewhere near the front door, or a hat stand where you can hang a small selection of bags, and grab whichever one you want as you leave the house. Do you agree?

A few days ago a friend of mine sent me the most beautiful quote. It resonated so deeply with me that I had to share it. I sent it to my sister as I felt like it was particularly poignant for her – it’s been a year since her husband fell ill and what a year it’s been, together they have defied all odds. My heart bursts.

And then it got me thinking about this ‘Silly Season’ and the expected chaos around it..

Last week, early in the morning, I decided to take a walk into the garden. Everyone had been fed, including myself *very important*, my big boy had gone off to school in our lift club, my husband had gone to work and I found I was ready for the day before I needed to be. My little boy only needed to be at play school in an hour and I had a client later that morning. 

We had had that soaking rain the night before. The morning had that ‘just-washed’ feeling. I walked barefoot onto the damp earth holding my boy’s hand, Ruby on my hip, and we just took a stroll. I noticed the simple things; the lush green trees towering into the expanse of clear blue sky, the rolling golf-course-like-lawns thanks to the rain, the birds tweeting their morning chorus. 

Ben decided he wanted to feel the water in the pool, once he did that he wanted to swim so he stripped off his pj’s and jumped in. I waded on the step with Ruby. The sun was warm but not hot, the water was sparkly and fresh. 

It was beautiful. 

I relished the slowness of the morning.. before the rest of the day began.

I walked back to our house feeling relaxed, and filled with gratitude for all the things I’d noticed whilst being outside.

It got me thinking about the craziness of this December month. If you have kids at big school it feels kind of more hectic as there is a lot going on, I have just one child at big school and these last few weeks of school term have felt demanding, so I can only imagine if you have more than one.

But, at the end of the day, regardless of whether you have the kid thing going on or not, nobody’s physically chaining you to a post making sure you go to that carol service, that Christmas-drinks-get-together, that party…you can actually say no to some of it.

It’s not easy at this time of year; there’s a lot going on, and a lot to get done, and it’s tiring..But it’s almost as if we’re all conditioned to bemoan how ‘hectic’ it is, when actually, it doesn’t need to be, if we make the conscious choice to slow it all down. I read a blog post earlier today which gave some great tips on how to have a Slow December. You might like to read it.. 

So I guess I’m sharing all of this because maybe, especially over the holidays, you’ll remember to stop, jump off the treadmill, take a breath and hold onto a simple moment or two.
